When it comes to reading, I think that I have improved greatly over the course of my freshman year. I understand how to analyze a book in a way that hadn't thought of before. Sometimes I get lost when the author talks about something that I did not know about. For example, in the beginning of Purple Hibiscus, the author uses the word "missal" and I did not know what that was. This kind of threw me off when trying to understand the rest of the chapter. I also find that interpreting the text, such as discovering the symbolism of certain thing is a struggle for me. Since discussing this in class, I have better understood how to interpret the text.
Books that we read this year as a class requirement were Lord of the Flies, Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Purple Hibiscus, and Macbeth. Some of the books that were "free-reads" include the entire Selection series and Si-Renity.
